Canon Talks the Arrival of 8K at NAB 2016

Senior Advisor, Film and TV Production at Canon, Tim Smith, explains how this NAB will look into the future of production with working 8K cameras and displays.

What are you most excited to see at this year's show?
NAB is always the show that predicts the future of the industry. I’m really looking forward to seeing not only Canon technology but also what’s being introduced all over the show floor.
What products/services will your company be showcasing?
We will be showing not only our existing product line, with a few surprises, but we will also be showing working 8K cameras and 8K displays that look into the future of production.
What trends in technology do you envision for the world of broadcast and content creation in upcoming years?
Lots of technologies are firming up this year. 8K is becoming a reality all though it is not here yet, but Canon is working hard on HDR acquisition and industry standards like ACES work flow.
What are you expecting to be "trending" or very popular at NAB?
I think you will be seeing some low-cost high-quality offerings that open up many possibilities for both big-and small-budget productions.
What events are you most excited to attend at the show?
For me it’s not as much the actual event as the chance to connect to the filmmakers and our dealers. I look forward to that every year.
Are you holding any special events at the show? If so, what are they?
Nothing offsite, but we are going all out on the show floor; we even has an immersive 8K vertical reality ride you have to see.
Describe a few of the panels Canon is putting on at their booth at NAB.
1) Amityville’s Next Chapter - Join cinematographer Steven Poster, ASC, 1st AC Gunnar Mortensen, and DIT Rohan Chitrakar as they discuss shooting their upcoming feature Amityville: The Awakening with the Canon Cinema EOS C500 at 3200 ISO. The panelists will explain the techniques they used to match the film’s established look when shooting pick-ups with the new Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II. 2) Burning Rubber with the Cinema EOS C300 Mark II - Cinematographer Kris Carrillo and 1st AC Ezra Bassin-Hill will discuss shooting a high-octane car commercial in 4K using the Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II. 3) The Bourne Technology - Members of the camera team from the upcoming installment of the Jason Bourne franchise – DIT Brook Willard, 1st AC Steven Wong, and 2nd Unit DP Igor Meglic – will describe the challenges and pleasures of shooting high-intensity action sequences using the Canon Cinema EOS C300 Mark II. Moderator Naida Albright, Filmmaker Liaison for Canon U.S.A., will take the panelists through topics including camera’s utility and durability, as well as the quality of the sensor and footage captured. How do you reinvent yourself each year at NAB?
It’s not about reinventing ourselves; Canon is and always will be an imaging company, but we are constantly talking with our end users and adapting to their needs.
